Films for the Mountains Festival
This year KOMANA is one of the sponsors supporting the upcoming screenings of Films for the Mountains Festival in Winterthur and Bern. Films for the Mountains is a joint project by Mountain Wilderness Switzerland and Films for the Earth. The goal is to use films to raise awareness about the beauty of pristine mountain landscapes and the threats they face.
We are pleased to share that a short KOMANA commercial will be presented before the films.
Greina
72’ | 2024 | Patrick Thurston | CH-DE, EN, IT, RR
In the 1970s, the Greina, which connects Graubünden with Ticino, became known throughout Switzerland. The architect and artist Bryan Cyril Thurston spent 20 years using his art to oppose the construction of a reservoir in this magnificent high plateau. At the time, his saying "Only poetry can save the Greina" seemed rather absurd to his son. Yet today, he sees an unexpected power in it. Beauty—everyone wants it!

The Monster in Our Closet
27’ | 2022 | Kathryn Francis | EN
This film highlights a major dilemma in the outdoor industry: the production of functional clothing is closely linked to the petroleum industry. The film challenges this dependency and presents solutions for the growing problem. Is environmentally responsible mountaineering possible under these circumstances?
Panel Discussion: Vanessa Rueber (Patagonia), Isabela Gygax (Fashion Revolution Switzerland), and Peter Flückiger (Swiss Textiles) will discuss the topic with Luisa Deubzer, Wilderness and Mountaineering Project Manager at Mountain Wilderness Switzerland. Discussion duration: approximately 45 minutes.

Free K2
30 minutes | 1991 | Alessandro Ojetti | ITA/EN
In July 1990, a caravan of porters left the apricot orchards at the peak of harvest and entered the Braldo Valley in Pakistan. Their destination: the Baltoro Glacier and, at its upper end, K2 (8,611 m), the world’s second-highest peak, more challenging to climb than Everest. This was not just another expedition. The internationally assembled team from Mountain Wilderness, consisting mostly of climbers who had already summited peaks above 8,000 meters, did not come to climb K2, but to clean it up.
Panel Discussion: Ethics in Mountaineering
Should fixed ropes and other infrastructure remain in place to make mountaineering more accessible, or should they be removed to preserve the natural state of the mountains and provide authentic experiences?
Luisa Deubzer (Mountain Wilderness Switzerland) will discuss the topic with: Daniel H. Anker (First Ascent Climber) and Jonas Schild (Professional Alpinist). Discussion duration: approximately 1 hour
